Lacquered Leather Saddle, Yi Culture, China

With a prominent horn and flaring cantle, intricately decorated with a pallate of red and yellow on a black ground in a pattern of circles, rectangles, lines and dots with floral and curvilinear patterns drawing on the customary patterns of the Li people and showing how effectively a utilitarian object becomes a piece of sculpture, segments of incised bone decorate the crupper.

 

CONDITION


some loss to rawhide ties, replaced by twine or rope, wear to leather underside, wear to painted stirrups and minor wear and some minor scattered lossed to lacquer on saddle, losses to bone beading, metal elements with patina showing age and some rust
