Two Japanese Shinto Protective Lion Dogs, Koma Inu

Edo period, carved in a folk style for a local Shinto shrine most likely from the northern region of Lake Biwa, posed seated with the heads turned, one with an open mouth, both with grooves to secure the now missing back legs, ears and mane, the bodies painted in an orange red with blue and white detailing on the mouth, eyes and front feet.

Loss to back legs, mane areas of front feet, tail, ears and further chips throughout, areas of pigment loss, some worm damage to both
