Carved and Painted Drum (Worua), Papua New Guinea

An early/mid-20th century cylinder drum from the Gogodala people (Hamson) of the Western Province, Papua New Guinea.

An hourglass-shaped body with profuse, graphic paint decoration in red and black overall. A carved integral handle spans the neck of the drum and a carved representation of an open-mouthed crocodile decorates its end.

Presented on custom base.
