Katoyo (Foreignor) Mask, Chokwe People, Angola/D. R. Congo

Brutish Katoyo mask from the Chockwe people of Angola and D.R. Congo in central Africa.

Because the purpose of these masks was to ridicule colonials and foreigners, the features are often distorted; this example having a long, thin face with deep inset eyes and large overhanging brow. Open mouth bearing sharp, triangular teeth.

Retains partial costume of monkey hair and woven net costume around.Remains of blue and red pigments evident on underside of brow.

Presented on custom base.
