Lot #010

Male Lü Me Figure, Zlan of Béléwalé, Dan People, Liberia

This figure exhibits features that place it firmly within the corpus of works associated with the carver Sra or Zlan (ca. 1885 – 1955) from the village of Béléwalé, Liberia.

In addition to his very specific way of rendering faces, features considered more particular or exclusive to Zlan might be this precise wide-crouching stance, bent arms with fingers folded against palms and facing one another and the four tiny, light-colored metal (presumably aluminum) teeth that are set into the upper lip.

Scarified torso and red and white pigment surrounding the eyes are both typical of Dan sculpture.

More unusual among Dan figures as a whole is the use of western slipper-type shoes rather than the bare feet and the inclusion of a distinctly European style cap… though it should be pointed out that the decoration on the cap is distinctly Dan.
